## Baffinland: A Giant Leap in Iron Ore Output

Baffinland has made a momentous decision to boost iron ore production at its Mary River mine to a staggering 6 million tonnes per year. This decision, coming hot on the heels of the federal government’s rejection of the proposed phase two expansion project at Mary River, is a shining beacon of hope for the future of the company and the region. The earlier expansion plans, aimed at increasing mine output to 12 million t/y, and the construction of a new 110-km railway to the port, were denied by the federal government. This iron-willed decision by Baffinland is a testament to the unwavering commitment to sustain jobs and push through hurdles to achieve success.

The Mary River property boasts five deposits, and Baffinland initiated mining operations in 2015 with a vision to establish an 18-million-t/y operation from deposit #1. The mining originally commenced at a rate of 3.5 million tonnes and the ore was hauled to the port of Milne Inlet. Notably, the mine operates as a conventional truck-and-shovel operation and houses portable crushers at the mine site.
