May ICE NY Cocoa Hits New Heights

The cocoa market is ablaze with fervor as May ICE NY cocoa (CCK24) soared to a remarkable +8.28% on Friday. On the same day, London’s cocoa #7 (CAK24) dazzled investors by closing at a staggering +6.60% increase. Both futures contracts unveiled shining new record highs, a monumental event sparked by escalating worries over diminishing cocoa supplies worldwide.

Ivory Coast Production Plunge Sparks Market Frenzy

Anxiety swirls over the economic repercussions of reduced cocoa production in the Ivory Coast, the globe’s premier producer. Government statistics released on Monday painted a grim picture, revealing a sharp 29% decline in cocoa shipments from October 1 to March 10 compared to the prior year. Adding to the distress, the Ivory Coast cocoa regulator anticipates a 33% drop in the upcoming mid-crop season, projecting output to plummet from 600,000 MT to a meager 400,000 MT. Ecom Agroindustrial, a key trading entity, foresees an alarming 21.5% plunge in Ivory Coast’s 2023/24 cocoa production, marking an eight-year nadir at 1.75 MMT.

Turmoil in U.S. Ports Signals Worldwide Strain

Looming scarcity in cocoa supplies is further amplified by the dwindling ICE-monitored cocoa inventories within U.S. ports, a situation not witnessed in three years. The stark reality of a global cocoa deficit was emphasized when the International Cocoa Organization (ICCO) projected an unprecedented -374,000 MT in the 2023/24 season, expanding from a -74,000 MT shortfall the previous year. ICCO’s distressing forecast includes a projected 11% decline in global cocoa production to 4.45 MMT and a nearly 5% reduction in cocoa grindings, leading to the lowest stock-to-grindings ratio in over four decades.

Weather Woes Aggravate Global Cocoa Crisis

Unfavorable weather patterns and crop diseases plaguing West African cocoa farms have catalyzed a vertiginous rally in cocoa prices. The repercussions of the global cocoa deficit, fueled by insufficient production to meet escalating demand, are anticipated to linger into the 2023/24 season. The current uptrend in cocoa prices is also underpinned by the effects of the ongoing El Nino weather event, reminiscent of a drought-induced rally to a twelve-year high following the 2016 El Nino episode.

Nigeria’s Diminished Exports Further Pressures Prices

Adding fuel to the already blazing cocoa market, Nigeria—the fifth-largest cocoa producer globally—witnessed a discouraging 15% year-on-year drop in cocoa exports in January, underscoring the challenging supply landscape. Moreover, the Ivory Coast cocoa regulatory authority, Le Conseil Cafe-Cacao, dealing another blow to market stability, halted forward cocoa sales for the 2024/25 season, compounding concerns over supply predictability.

Record Prices Dampen Global Appetite for Cocoa

The giddying highs seen in cocoa prices are beginning to take a toll on global consumption. Q4 data reported by various confectionery associations in North America, Asia, and Europe have unveiled concerning year-on-year declines in cocoa grindings. North American cocoa grindings fell by 3.0%, while Asian and European counterparts experienced even steeper 8.5% and 2.5% drops, respectively. These dwindling consumption figures hint at a possible softening of demand, reflecting the exorbitant prices in the cocoa market.
