Ford’s Consideration to Discontinue F-150 Lightning
Ford Motor Company (NYSE: F) is contemplating discontinuing its electric F-150 Lightning amid significant production disruptions. The decision comes after the automaker halted production in mid-October due to a fire at aluminum supplier Novelis, which is expected to impact inventory levels and production recovery into early 2024.
Current projections indicate a drop in production rates to about 280 Lightnings per week starting in February, down from an average of 950 prior to the shutdown. Despite the concerns, Ford maintained that the F-150 Lightning remains the best-selling electric pickup in the U.S., delivering record sales in Q3 2023.
Ford plans to introduce a new midsize electric truck by 2027, projected to be priced around $30,000, as part of its “Ford Universal EV Production System” aimed at reducing costs and improving efficiency in EV manufacturing.
