The FDA has issued a warning to consumers and healthcare providers about the potential risks associated with using smartwatches or smart rings claiming to measure blood glucose levels without skin penetration.

These devices are distinct from FDA-authorized applications that present data from skin-piercing blood glucose measuring devices, such as continuous glucose monitoring devices (CGMs).

The FDA has not granted approval to any smartwatch or smart ring independently intended for measuring blood glucose.

Despite the proliferation of various manufacturers and brand names, the FDA strongly advises against using any such device purporting non-invasive blood glucose measurement.

In a statement, the FDA emphasized its efforts to prevent illegal marketing of unauthorized smartwatches or smart rings claiming to measure blood glucose levels by manufacturers, distributors, and sellers.

The public is cautioned against utilizing smartwatches or smart rings for blood glucose measurement, and the FDA is encouraging individuals to report any issues or adverse events through the MedWatch Voluntary Reporting Form.

Apple Inc AAPL and Samsung Electronics Ltd SSNLF SSNHZ have reportedly been engaged in the development of non-invasive blood glucose monitoring technology for multiple years.

According to a Bloomberg report from last year, Apple’s no-prick monitoring was in the β€œproof-of-concept stage,” with its market introduction being contingent on overcoming size constraints. Apple embarked on the project in 2010, but it is anticipated to take several more years before the technology becomes compact enough for integration into the Apple Watch.

Likewise, Samsung is also endeavoring to integrate this technology into its recently unveiled product, the Galaxy Ring.
