The West Kootenays region in British Columbia’s Southeast, which includes the historical mining camp of Rossland, is set to benefit from a new research project by Geoscience BC.

Under the leadership of Dr. Trygve HΓΆy, the project aims to update the geological mapsheet of the western portion of Nelson. This will be achieved through the compilation of existing geological data, combined with field surveys and mapping.

Building on similar work carried out by Geoscience BC in the Boundary District, the project will provide publicly available maps and supporting data to industry stakeholders, Indigenous groups, and local communities. This information will assist in making informed decisions related to resource development. The BC Geological Survey will also collaborate on this project.

β€œThe West Kootenay region has seen significant interest in mineral exploration, particularly in base metals like zinc, which is classified as a critical mineral in Canada,” said Christa Pellett, Vice President Minerals at Geoscience BC. β€œThrough the provision of updated geological maps and data, Geoscience BC aims to boost regional mineral exploration.”
