A seismic event has torn through the normally bustling airwaves of the United States, subjecting major carriers—AT&T Inc. T, Verizon Communications Inc. VZ, and T-Mobile US Inc. TMUS—to a harrowing nationwide outage.

What Caused the Upheaval: The tumult began at around 7 a.m. ET, as AT&T’s service was besieged by over 51,000 outage incidents, per data from Downdetector. The chaos rippled across prominent urban centers, ensnaring San Francisco, Houston, and Chicago in its web of disruption.

Customers of Verizon (VZ.N), T-Mobile (TMUS.O), and US Cellular also grappled with service disruptions, according to Downdetector.

Despite T-Mobile experiencing a little over 3,000 outage incidents, Verizon was relatively unscathed with just over 1,200 such incidents.

Curiously, a T-Mobile spokesperson disputed the existence of an outage and insisted that the network was operating unimpeded.

The San Francisco Fire Department, via a post on a major social media platform, cautioned that the outage was impeding individuals’ ability to summon emergency services via 911.

“We are aware of an issue impacting AT&T wireless customers from making and receiving any phone calls (including to 911),” the fire department lamented, emphasizing their vigilant monitoring of the situation.

Significance of the Meltdown: This far-reaching outage has not only thrown a wrench into routine communication channels but has also imperiled public safety on a significant scale. Multiple law enforcement agencies have acknowledged the issue, underscoring its critical nature.

The deleterious impact of the outage on emergency services emphatically underscores the indispensable role that telecom companies play in upholding the edifice of public safety infrastructure.
