Alphabet Inc. GOOG GOOGL Google made the tough call to discontinue its bold social media venture, Keen.

The Rise and Fall: Launched in 2020 under Area 120, Keen, residing at Staykeen.com, harnessed machine learning to curate tailored recommendations and search results for users creating virtual curation boards known as “Keens.”

Despite its promising ingenuity, Keen remained stagnant since December 2021. The decision to lay Keen to rest echoes a string of project closures and personnel cuts within Area 120 throughout 2023.

Prior to the platform’s March 24 closure, Google urged Keen aficionados to secure their data. All user content, from posts to reactions, faces permanent erasure post-shutdown.

Google lauded Keen for its insights on content curation, bridging tailored suggestions with user passions. The tech titan remains mum on the fate of other Area 120 initiatives in the upcoming year.

The Ripple Effects: This latest move falls in line with Google’s pattern of sunsetting projects. In December, Google bid adieu to Google Play Movies & TV, guiding users to other digital entertainment platforms.

Furthermore, the shuttering of Google Podcasts in September saw Google nudging users towards YouTube Music. In January, over 1,000 employees faced layoffs—the largest scale decimation since January 2023—touching non-hardware divisions like Assistant and core engineering.

Market Musings: Google shares concluded Thursday at $143.77, dipping by 0.39%, per Benzinga Pro data.
