Dow Jones Industrial Average and Honeywell Update
As of May 14, 2023, the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) surpassed 50,000 points. Honeywell International (NASDAQ: HON), which was added to the index on August 31, 2020, has underperformed significantly with a total return of 56.2%, compared to Raytheon Technologies (NYSE: RTX), which boasts a 231.1% return in the same period.
Honeywell’s struggles have been attributed to weak earnings growth, supply chain issues, and inefficiencies within its conglomerate structure. In response, activist investor Elliott Investment Management has advocated for breaking up Honeywell’s operations, leading to the spin-off of Solstice Advanced Materials on October 20, 2025, which has already gained 79.4%. A further spin-off, Honeywell Aerospace (ticker: HONA), is expected by June 29, 2026, while the remaining business will focus on industrial and building automation.
