Exchange-traded funds (ETFs) function similarly to stocks; however, investors buy and sell ‘units’ instead of traditional ‘shares.’ These units are traded just like stocks but can also be created or destroyed based on investor demand. Each week, we monitor the changes in shares outstanding to identify ETFs that experience significant inflows, indicating many new units created, or outflows, signifying many units destroyed. When new units are created, the ETF’s underlying holdings must be acquired, while the destruction of units entails selling off holdings. Consequently, substantial flows can influence the performance of individual components within the ETFs.
