In a bid to restore a vital safety feature, the electric vehicle behemoth Tesla Inc TSLA has rolled out a software update to more than 6,500 vehicles that inadvertently muted pedestrian warning sounds during a factory reset.

What Prompted This: According to a filing with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), units of Model S, Model X, Model 3, and Model Y had their pedestrian alert systems muted post a factory reset, potentially endangering pedestrians who might not be alerted to approaching vehicles. In response, Tesla commenced issuing a software update post-February 12 to restore the muted alerts.

The Solution: Tesla outlined in the filing that owners simply need to install the software update themselves, obviating the need for a service visit. The company noted 49 warranty claims related to the issue as of February 20. Despite this, Tesla emphasized that no accidents, injuries, or fatalities have occurred due to the muted alert glitch.
