Bill Gates Foundation Sells Microsoft Stock

The Gates Foundation has completely sold its holdings of Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT) during the first quarter of 2023, which raises concerns among investors. This decision comes amid a broader sell-off of staple stocks, including Berkshire Hathaway (NYSE: BRKA, BRKB), as the foundation is scheduled to shut down by 2045 and must distribute its funds before then.

Microsoft’s stock has declined over 20% from its recent highs and is currently at a valuation low not seen since 2019. Despite these challenges, the company is positioned to benefit from significant investments in artificial intelligence (AI) and its cloud computing platform, Azure, which is becoming increasingly relevant as demand for AI solutions grows. Analysts suggest the foundation’s decision may not be indicative of Microsoft’s long-term performance, given Gates’ lack of involvement with the company since leaving its board in 2020.
