Over the weekend, Tesla Inc TSLA declared an upcoming price hike for U.S. Model Ys on April 1st and for European Model Ys on March 22nd. Concurrently, Tesla is offering freshness discounts for Model Y trims in China. In a bid to sustain sales, Tesla has been slashing prices aggressively for over a year, resulting in auto gross margins falling below 20% from their 30% peak in Q4 2021 due to chip shortages. Even the behemoth Tesla now grapples with the need to produce an affordable EV to wrestle its rivals in the midst of the EV market’s slowdown.
Last summer, XPeng Inc XPEV unveiled plans to introduce a brand that costs 50% less to navigate a saturated EV market and Tesla-induced price wars. On Saturday, it announced the imminent launch of this budget-friendly EV brand. Moreover, Nio Inc NIO, a Chinese deluxe EV maker, disclosed plans to uncover its mass-market brand come May.
XPeng’s Quest for Affordability
Amidst cutthroat competition in China, XPeng aims to breathe life into a budget-friendly EV brand through a strategic alliance with Didi. The models are slated to launch within the next month and will be priced between 100,000 yuan and 150,000 yuan, equivalent to $14,000 to $21,000. By entering this competitive segment, XPeng vies for a slice of the affordable EV pie.
Nio is gearing up to release a mass-market EV tailored for families. Earlier this month, Nio unveiled its mass-market brand, “Le Dao,” symbolizing familial joy. The first product roll-out is projected for the third quarter, with large-scale deliveries to follow in subsequent quarters. Since its establishment in 2014, Nio has predominantly focused on the high-end market with SUVs and sedans carrying hefty price tags compared to Tesla Model S and Model Y. Through this fresh strategy, Nio anticipates sky-rocketing deliveries to bridge the gap with its rapidly advancing EV peers.
2024 emerges as the year of accessible EVs. Affordability remains a significant hurdle to widespread EV adoption—a challenge even Tesla has yet to surmount. While Tesla has teased an affordable $25,000 EV since 2020, Elon Musk’s promise of a low-cost compact Tesla EV by late 2025 is met with skepticism given Tesla’s track record of missed deadlines, exemplified by numerous setbacks before the Cybertruck’s release. As Tesla grapples with production hurdles, the imperative of launching an inexpensive EV is paramount to stay competitive in the EV arena, especially against rivals like BYD Company Limited BYDDY, which dethroned the EV titan in Q4 2023. The epoch of pickups has evolved into an age centered on affordable EV innovation in 2024.
