Intel and AMD Unite to Strengthen the x86 Ecosystem

Intel Corp INTC and Advanced Micro Devices, Inc AMD have announced the formation of an x86 Ecosystem Advisory Group.

The x86 architecture, developed by Intel, is the backbone of the computing industry, used in data centers and personal computers for more than 40 years.

Intel initially created the x86 family of processors, known as central processing units (CPUs), and has maintained a strong presence in this sector.

Data from Statista shows that in the third quarter of 2024, Intel processors represented 63% of all x86 CPU tests, whereas AMD processors accounted for 33%. This initiative seeks to improve compatibility, streamline software development, and grow the x86 ecosystem in line with changing customer needs.

The advisory group highlights the x86 platform’s role in addressing newer technologies such as artificial intelligence, custom chiplets, and advancements in overall system architecture.

Pat Gelsinger, Intel’s CEO, stressed the importance of their collaboration, stating that the x86 architecture is at a crucial juncture. He noted the need for customization and scalability to meet new demands. Meanwhile, Lisa Su, AMD’s CEO, agreed, indicating that the group would support the ongoing evolution of x86 to align with customer and developer needs.

Prominent tech companies, including Broadcom Inc AVGO, Microsoft Corp MSFT, and Alphabet Inc GOOG GOOGL Google Cloud have already voiced their support for this new initiative.

The x86 processor has established itself as the leading platform for laptops, desktops, and servers around the world, forming the basis for both Windows and Mac machines.

Historically, Apple Inc AAPL switched from using PowerPC microprocessors to Intel’s x86 architecture back in 2006 for its Mac line. However, in 2020, Apple initiated a change from Intel CPUs to Arm Holdings plc ARM-based processors, aiming to standardize the architecture across its products, including iPhone, iPad, and Mac devices.

Latest Stock Movements: On the most recent trading day, AMD stock rose by 0.15%, reaching $156.87, while INTC stock declined by 3.15%, closing at $21.95.
