On Thursday, September 16, lean hog futures experienced steady trading, with nearby contracts gaining up to 15 cents. The USDA reported a national base hog price of $105.60, a decrease of $1.11 from the previous day. The CME Lean Hog Index also fell by 14 cents to $105.86.
Pork exports for the week ending on September 11 reached 21,992 metric tons (MT), surpassing the previous week. Japan was the top buyer at 6,600 MT, followed by Mexico at 6,200 MT. Total shipments were 29,396 MT, marking a 10-week high, with Mexico receiving 14,500 MT and Japan 4,100 MT.
The USDA reported a federally inspected hog slaughter of 476,000 head on Thursday, bringing the week’s total to 1.94 million head, which is 7,000 head lower than the previous week but 40,875 head higher than the same week last year.
