TSMC’s Dominance in Chip Manufacturing
Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (NYSE: TSM) continues to be the world leader in semiconductor manufacturing, holding over 90% of the market for AI chip production. In Q3, TSMC reported revenue of $33.1 billion, with its high-performance computing segment, which includes AI chips, accounting for 57% of total revenue. The company’s gross margins increased from 57.8% to 59.5%, while operating margins climbed from 47.5% to 50.6%, demonstrating its pricing power in a competitive landscape.
TSMC manufactures custom chips for major tech companies like Apple, Nvidia, and Amazon, which have increasingly relied on TSMC for their chip needs. The firm operates under a foundry model, producing chips based on specific designs ordered by these companies instead of general sales. This strategic approach allows TSMC to avoid the considerable investments required for building its own plants or hiring specialized engineers.
