Uber Faces Competition from Autonomous Vehicles
Uber Technologies (NYSE: UBER) CEO Dara Khosrowshahi highlighted the potential of autonomous vehicles (AVs) to unlock a multi-trillion-dollar opportunity during the fourth-quarter earnings call on August 1, 2025. Despite concerns about competition from leaders like Tesla and Waymo, Uber claims advantages in global scale and marketplace technology that differentiate it in the evolving mobility market.
Currently, Uber operates AV rides in seven cities, with plans to expand to a total of 15 markets by the end of the year. As of now, AVs constitute only 0.1% of global ride-hailing trips, but Khosrowshahi expects significant growth as operational challenges are addressed. Uber’s user base includes 202 million active users, providing a strong network effect for future growth.
