Key News Facts
The United States plans to retire the International Space Station (ISS) in 2030, enlisting Elon Musk to safely deorbit it. In preparation, four teams are working on replacements: Orbital Reef, led by Blue Origin, and Starlab, led by Voyager Technologies, among others. Axiom Space, co-founded by former ISS program manager Michael Suffredini, is also developing its own station.
Axiom recently secured $350 million in funding from various investors, including Type One Ventures and the Qatar Investment Authority. This funding aims to build its first module, the Payload Power Thermal Module (PPTM), scheduled for launch in 2028, followed by a habitation module in 2029.
The race for space station supremacy involves several milestones: Axiom’s first module is anticipated to be operational by 2029, while Vast’s Haven-1 module is expected to orbit in 2027. Starlab also aims for a complete launch in 2029, while Orbital Reef’s timeline remains uncertain, targeting no earlier than 2030.
