Amazon’s Planned $200 Billion Investment in 2026
Amazon (NASDAQ: AMZN) has announced a staggering $200 billion in expected capital expenditures for 2026, representing a more than 50% increase year-over-year. This significant investment aims to bolster its cloud computing division, Amazon Web Services (AWS), where AI-related revenue already reached a $15 billion run rate earlier this year.
Supporting this expansion, Amazon recently invested an additional $5 billion in AI lab Anthropic, with plans for up to $20 billion more. In return, Anthropic has committed to spending $100 billion on AWS services. This expansion aligns with a growing demand for compute capacity within AI, highlighted by Anthropic’s increased pricing and usage restrictions. As a result, AWS’s existing backlog of performance obligations now stands at $244 billion.
While the increased spending may lead to negative free cash flow for Amazon in 2026, long-term projections indicate a potential recovery, with previous free cash flow peaking at $53 billion in mid-2024. Investors are advised to monitor AWS revenue growth as an indicator of the success of these capital investments.
