State Street’s Market Forecast
State Street Advisors forecasts that the S&P Small Cap 600 and MSCI Emerging Markets indexes will outperform the S&P 500 over the next three to five years, projecting returns of 7.6% and 7.5% respectively, compared to the S&P 500’s 7.1% annual return. This is based on expectations of strong earnings growth and cheaper valuations in small-cap and emerging market stocks.
Historically, the S&P 500 has significantly outperformed the Small Cap 600 and MSCI Emerging Markets over the past decade, returning 315% compared to the 180% and 133% achieved by the other two indices. Current economic pressures, including high interest rates and global instability, may continue to influence performance in these sectors.
