Live cattle futures rose between $1.47 and $2.92 on Tuesday, with cash trade from the previous week closing around $256-257. The CME Feeder Cattle Index decreased by 21 cents to $375.33. During the weekly Oklahoma City feeder cattle auction, 6,402 head were sold, with feeder prices steady to $4 higher for steers, while heifers remained steady to $2 lower. Calves increased by $5 to $10 per head.
According to the Tuesday APHIS update, Mexico reported 1,674 active cases of New World Screwworm as of Monday, including 126 cases in Tamaulipas (3 near the U.S. border) and 21 in Nuevo Leon (6 near the border). March beef exports totaled 207.25 million pounds, marking a 10-year low for the month but a 12.9% increase from February.
USDA estimated the federally inspected cattle slaughter for Tuesday at 104,000 head, bringing the weekly total to 202,000, which is down 13,000 head from last week and 27,987 head from the same week last year. Wholesale boxed beef prices saw increases, with Choice boxes up 78 cents to $393.42 and Select boxes up $1.64 to $392.24.
