Chinese EVs Make Inroads in Canada Amid U.S. Concerns
Geely has become the first Chinese automaker to export electric vehicles (EVs) to Canada, introducing 18 Lotus Eletre crossovers in May 2023. This move raises alarms among U.S. automakers like Ford and General Motors, as there is a growing fear that cheap Chinese EVs could undermine domestic manufacturing.
Canada’s agreement allows the import of up to 49,000 China-built EVs annually at a 6.1% tariff rate. However, 100% tariffs on Chinese vehicles entering the U.S. will likely prevent these exports from significantly impacting U.S. markets in the near term, even if equipment is rerouted through Canada or Mexico.
Despite these protections, U.S. manufacturers are preparing for potential threats as companies like BYD and Chery Automobile plan their entrance into the Canadian market. Investors are urged to remain vigilant as this situation develops.
