S&P 500’s Strong Performance
The S&P 500 has achieved total returns of nearly 80% over the past three years. Despite this, technology stocks, particularly within the Vanguard Mega Cap Growth ETF (NYSEMKT: MGK), have significantly outperformed the index, which is illustrated by a hypothetical $10,000 investment growing to approximately $106,000 in the ETF, compared to $73,000 in the S&P 500.
Launched in 2007, MGK focuses on large-cap stocks, specifically targeting mega-cap companies with market values over $200 billion. The ETF’s weighted top holdings include Nvidia, Apple, and Microsoft, which together account for over 33% of the portfolio. However, the fund’s concentrated focus on these growth stocks could pose risks; in the 2022 bear market, MGK fell by 35%, compared to a 24% drop in the S&P 500.
