Netflix Abandons Roku Acquisition Amid Strategic Realignment
Netflix has decided not to pursue the acquisition of Roku, an opportunity that reportedly involved special considerations following its unsuccessful bid for Warner Bros. Discovery. While Roku recently accepted a $22 billion buyout offer from Fox, Netflix’s focus is now on remaining disciplined in future mergers and acquisitions, with sources suggesting potential interest in a deal with Lionsgate, valued around $8 billion.
Netflix’s co-CEO, Ted Sarandos, noted that the company has strengthened its M&A discipline through past experiences, emphasizing the importance of value in deal-making. The move away from Roku comes as Netflix aims to avoid friction with existing partners like Sony and Amazon, especially given potential antitrust concerns surrounding the integration of hardware assets.
