Sandvik has announced a partnership with Rio Tinto to develop an autonomous drilling system (ADS) for surface drill rigs. The collaboration leverages Rio Tinto’s expertise in remote operations and Sandvik’s AutoMine automation technology.
Project development will commence at Sandvik’s facilities in Finland, then transition to Rio Tinto’s operation center in Perth, Australia, for field trials. The initiative aims to enhance interoperability and capabilities for remote, multi-rig operations, supporting safer and more flexible open-pit mining.
This joint effort builds on Rio Tinto’s existing autonomous systems and Sandvik’s ongoing enhancements to its AutoMine technology, with a focus on enabling a future autonomous drill fleet that accommodates various drill models on unified platforms.
