Key Updates on General Motors’ Digital Strategy

General Motors (NYSE: GM) has reported a significant boost in its digital revenue, achieving $6.3 billion in deferred revenue from its OnStar subscription services by the end of Q2 2023, marking a nearly 50% year-over-year increase. The company’s innovative digital strategy now includes bundling long-term prepaid OnStar and Super Cruise trials with new vehicle purchases, aiming to convert users into long-term subscribers. This approach has resulted in retention rates of 30% to 40% for the Super Cruise service after a three-year term.

Aside from GM, Ford Motor Company (NYSE: F) is also pursuing a digital subscription model with its BlueCruise service, priced at $495 annually or $49.99 monthly, which saw 1.22 million vehicles equipped as of last year. Despite a different sales strategy, Ford’s BlueCruise also boasts attractive profit margins around 70% and is advancing with an 88% increase in hands-free miles driven globally. In comparison, GM anticipates reaching 13 million subscribers by the end of 2026, showcasing a competitive landscape in the automotive digital services market.
