Cattle Prices React to Border Reopening Developments

Live cattle futures dropped between $2.10 and $5.05 on August 26, with prices at $224.975 for August, $218.600 for October, and $217.225 for December. Feeder cattle futures saw larger losses, falling by $7.75 to $10.75, with August prices at $337.575, September at $331.300, and October at $325.250. Cash trade last week registered between $230 and $231 nationally.

The USDA announced plans to resume imports of Mexican cattle by August 23 at the Douglas, AZ port and two additional New Mexico ports. Cattle on Feed data revealed June placements decreased by 2.91% year-over-year to 1.399 million head, while marketings were down 2.69% to 1.661 million head. As of July 1, on-feed data showed an increase of 2.21% compared to 2025, totaling 11.37 million head.

The USDA’s Cold Storage report indicates a 3.43% decrease in beef stocks from the end of May to 389.23 million lbs for June 30, down 2.76% from the previous year. Last week, federally inspected cattle slaughter reached 528,000 head, up 3,000 from the previous week but 15,766 below the same week last year.
