TerraPower’s Nuclear Project & Market Context

Bill Gates’ privately held company, TerraPower, has begun groundbreaking for its Natrium reactor in Kemmerer, Wyoming, marking a significant step in the development of advanced nuclear technology. Scheduled to produce its first power by 2030, the 345-megawatt sodium-cooled reactor, which can temporarily boost output to 500 megawatts, is the first of its kind to receive a U.S. construction permit for a non-traditional design. This initiative is part of a broader trend linking nuclear energy to the growing electricity demands driven by artificial intelligence (AI) applications.

For investors, the publicly traded companies Oklo and NuScale Power provide exposure to the advanced nuclear market. Oklo aims to deploy its Aurora micro reactor, targeting data centers and industrial sites, with an estimated timeline for deployment around 2027. NuScale, recognized for holding the only SMR design certified by U.S. regulators, expects to have its first modules ready for production by this year, with commercial operations anticipated by 2030. Both firms currently face significant execution risks, as they are largely speculative bets with their first reactors still years away.
