Sea Limited (SE) has partnered with OpenAI to integrate AI technology into its e-commerce platform, Shopee, aiming to enhance operations across Southeast Asia and Brazil. The agreement, established in June, will facilitate broader access to ChatGPT and improve developer engagement through Codex.

In Q1 2026, Shopee achieved $37.3 billion in gross merchandise value, representing a 30.2% year-over-year increase with 4 billion gross orders. The Shopee app is now integrated with ChatGPT in eight countries, allowing users to discover products via conversational prompts. Additionally, Sea is expanding AI capabilities through its newly founded Artificial Intelligence Centre of Excellence in Singapore, focusing on foundational AI and business automation.

Despite an adjusted EBITDA decline from $264.4 million to $223.2 million year-over-year, Sea reported a 14% improvement in purchase conversion linked to AI tools. Currently, around 80% of customer inquiries are managed by AI chatbots, cutting customer service costs by about 30% year-over-year. Sea’s investment in AI comes amid broader spending initiatives aimed at improving operational efficiency while maintaining profitability.
