Nvidia Invests $105 Billion in OpenAI: Implications for Investors

Nvidia is set to provide up to $105 billion in financing guarantees for a massive OpenAI data center in Ohio, which is expected to generate about $200 billion in chip sales from its first phase. This deal marks a significant collaboration as OpenAI commits to utilizing Nvidia chips exclusively at the facility, projected to eventually deliver 8 gigawatts (GW) of computing power—sufficient to power New York City.

The financing structure allows Nvidia to serve as a backstop for OpenAI, meaning that Nvidia will cover any unpaid lease and power obligations if OpenAI defaults, with no upfront costs incurred. However, OpenAI faces a steep financial commitment, planning to spend approximately $750 billion on AI infrastructure by 2030, which raises concerns regarding its financial viability. The project will be phased, starting with 0.8 GW by 2028, leading up to the full capacity over time.

This strategic partnership underscores Nvidia’s increasing investment in AI infrastructure, amid a broader context of hefty market risks, as OpenAI’s financial challenges could pose significant implications for Nvidia’s future revenue.
