Moderna and Merck Achieve Melanoma Treatment Milestone

On Wednesday, Moderna (MRNA) announced positive topline results from its pivotal Phase 3 INTerpath-001 trial, where its individualized mRNA neoantigen therapy, in conjunction with Merck’s (MRK) Keytruda, significantly extended the time until melanoma recurrence and reduced the risk of cancer spreading. This breakthrough comes as over 1.5 million Americans currently live with melanoma, one of the deadliest cancers.

Moderna’s shares soared over 130% amid this news, marking a significant turnaround for the biotech firm, which has struggled since its peak of $497 during the COVID-19 pandemic. The trial highlighted Moderna as the first biotech company to successfully execute a Phase 3 trial for a personalized mRNA cancer vaccine, using its technology to target up to 34 patient-specific neoantigens.

The drastic increase in share price also resulted from a high short interest in the stock, with nearly 14.1% of shares sold short prior to the announcement, forcing bears to cover their positions. Analysts are optimistic about Moderna’s potential revenue diversification beyond its COVID-19 vaccine legacy, indicating a significant advancement in targeted cancer treatment.
