Space Exploration Technologies (NASDAQ: SPCX) CEO Elon Musk announced on August 11 that the company aims to have a cumulative power capacity of 20 gigawatts for its AI infrastructure by the end of 2024. However, he estimates that reaching approximately 15 gigawatts is more realistic.

Musk emphasized the importance of energy sources in powering AI data centers and highlighted the potential role of nuclear energy in this context. Oklo Inc. (NYSE: OKLO) is noted for its small modular reactors (SMRs), designed specifically for data center applications, which could expedite deployment compared to conventional nuclear plants.

Currently, only two SMR systems are in commercial operation globally, with Oklo still awaiting U.S. regulatory approval. The competition is substantial, and while Oklo could emerge as a key energy supplier for SpaceX, it faces challenges, including Musk’s previous public disagreements with OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, an early investor in Oklo.
