Alibaba’s Shift in Focus

Alibaba Group (NYSE: BABA) reported a 9% year-over-year increase in revenue for its fiscal Q1 2027, ending June 30. However, its AI cloud and computing services saw a remarkable 45% revenue surge, reaching 48.4 billion yuan (approximately $7.1 billion), with adjusted EBITA growing 133% to 5.6 billion yuan ($830 million). This shift indicates a strong transition towards AI and cloud services, which are now becoming key growth areas for the company.

To support this transformation, Alibaba has increased its capital expenditures by 75% year-over-year, totaling 67.7 billion yuan this quarter. The company is committing 380 billion yuan ($56.5 billion) to AI and cloud infrastructure by 2029, with an expectation to break even in about three years. Despite this aggressive spending, Alibaba’s e-commerce operations continue to be a vital cash source, enabling further investment in its AI initiatives.
