**Sugar Prices Fall Amid Supply Concerns and Import Adjustments**
On October 2, 2023, sugar prices saw a significant drop, with New York world sugar #11 down by 2.10% to $17.32 per pound and London ICE white sugar #5 down by 3.49% to $518.80 per metric ton. This decline marks a one-week low for London sugar, attributed mainly to less-than-expected sugar imports from India. Indian sugar analyst Greenleaf reported that India is likely to import no more than 500,000 metric tons (MT) by October 31, a significant reduction from the anticipated 1 million MT. In response to upcoming demand for the festival season, the Indian government has announced it will cut import duties on sugar, allowing for tariff-free imports up to 1 million MT.
The global sugar market outlook appears increasingly bearish, with projections of a global sugar deficit of approximately 3.3 million MT for the 2026/27 season due to adverse weather conditions and lower production in major sugar-producing nations. Brazil’s sugar production fell by 26.3% year-on-year in June, responding to rising ethanol prices driven by crude oil fluctuations. Meanwhile, India’s cumulative monsoon rainfall was reported to be 13% below normal, raising concerns about potential impacts on future sugar production.
