Tesla’s Expansion in Las Vegas
The Nevada Transportation Authority voted unanimously on August 20 to allow Tesla to operate up to 5,000 driverless vehicles in Clark County over the next 12 months. This marks a significant increase from the previous interim permit that restricted Tesla to just 10 vehicles along the Las Vegas Strip. In total, the recent approvals from the Authority pave the way for approximately 7,000 paid robotaxis in the county, as Waymo and Uber were also granted permits for 1,000 vehicles each.
The new permit requires Tesla to meet specific conditions, including vehicle inspections and insurance documentation, before launching paid rides. While the approved area includes Harry Reid International Airport, additional authorization will be necessary to serve that location. Currently, Tesla’s operations span several areas, but the company anticipates challenges in deploying the full 5,000 vehicles, with plans to instead focus on slowly ramping up service.
