Can Apple’s M6 and M5 Ultra Compete with Google and Microsoft in AI Innovation?

Apple Inc. has unveiled its new M6 and M5 Ultra chips to enhance its AI capabilities in the Mac lineup. The M6, featured in the new Mac mini, is Apple’s first 2-nanometer chip, boasting a 12-core CPU and GPU, a Dual 16-core Neural Engine, and up to 170GB/s memory bandwidth. The M5 Ultra, powering the Mac Studio, utilizes a quad-die architecture with a 36-core CPU, 80-core GPU, and 1.2TB/s memory bandwidth.

These chips are designed to bolster on-device AI processing, with the M6’s Neural Engine reportedly delivering twice the peak compute compared to former models. The M5 Ultra aims to cater to AI researchers and developers by supporting up to 512GB of unified memory, allowing advanced language models and tasks to run locally. This supports Apple’s growing AI initiatives amid a 29% year-over-year surge in Mac revenues, totaling $10.4 billion for Q3 2026.

Despite these advancements, Apple faces stiff competition from Alphabet and Microsoft, who are building extensive AI ecosystems. Alphabet’s Gemini, with 950 million monthly active users, and Microsoft’s AI-driven productivity tools like Microsoft 365 Copilot, which has over 30 million paid seats, highlight the competitive landscape as Apple seeks to expand its AI foothold while maintaining its hardware and ecosystem advantages.
