Toyota’s Electric Vehicle Surge
In the quarter ending June, Toyota Motor (NYSE: TM) produced 2.71 million vehicles, with 1.41 million (51.9%) being electric, primarily hybrids. This marks a significant turn in the automotive landscape as hybrid vehicles now dominate sales over battery-only electric vehicles (BEVs).
While BEV sales in the U.S. reached 1.26 million in 2025, hybrid sales surged past 2.05 million, a year-over-year increase of 27.6%. Worldwide, out of approximately 90 million cars sold last year, nearly 16.3 million were hybrids, outpacing BEV sales represented by Tesla and BYD, which totaled 3.86 million.
Market research forecasts hybrid sales could hit nearly 126 million annually by 2034 as consumer interest in alternatives to combustion engines strengthens. Toyota, which sold over 4.6 million hybrid cars last fiscal year, is well-positioned to capitalize on this growing demand.
