**Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh’s Jackson Hole Speech Highlights Monetary Policy Stance**
At the Jackson Hole Economic Symposium on August 25, 2023, Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh made it clear that he will not provide Wall Street with a detailed roadmap for future interest rate changes, emphasizing “mystery creates power.” His statements did not deter traders, who subsequently raised the likelihood of a quarter-point rate hike in September to approximately 56%.
Despite recent inflation data showing the Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) index rose 0.2% in July, keeping the annual rate at 3.7%, Warsh acknowledged that inflation remains above the Fed’s 2% target. He highlighted that over half of the components in the PCE index have risen more than 3% over the past year. While some encouraging signs were noted, such as the trimmed-mean PCE at 2.3%, Warsh insisted that the Fed must maintain a focus on underlying inflation trends rather than rely solely on a specific set of metrics.
