Uber Technologies, WeRide, and AVOMO have received Spain’s first national permit for Level 4 autonomous passenger vehicles to operate on public roads. The authorization was granted by Spain’s Directorate General of Traffic under the ES-AV framework and is supported by the Regional Government of Madrid, marking a major step toward the launch of the country’s first commercial autonomous vehicle service, set to commence by the end of 2026.
This initiative will initially deploy 20 autonomous vehicles equipped with WeRide’s technology in high-demand areas across Greater Madrid, supervised by in-car vehicle specialists. The project is expected to expand into 11 more cities by 2030, with a goal of deploying tens of thousands of autonomous vehicles globally, enhancing Madrid’s role as a European hub for autonomous mobility.
The permit is WeRide’s ninth for autonomous driving worldwide and signifies Madrid’s potential for broader European expansion. The authorization will enable preparatory activities such as mapping and operational-readiness testing, consolidating the collaborative efforts of WeRide’s technology, Uber’s mobility platform, and AVOMO’s fleet management expertise.
