Corn Market Retreats Following USDA Yield Adjustment

Corn futures experienced midday losses of 2 to 3 cents on Friday, with the CmdtyView national average cash corn price down 2.5 cents at $4.85 1/2. A private export sale of 264,000 metric tons was reported by the USDA, all designated for shipment to Mexico in the 2026/27 season.

The USDA’s monthly Crop Production report indicated a decrease in U.S. corn yield by 2.2 bushels per acre to 178.5 bpa, matching trade estimates. Additionally, corn production was reduced by 213 million bushels from August to 15.8 billion bushels, while harvested acres were trimmed by 87,000 acres to 85.506 million acres. The World Agricultural Outlook Board also noted that old crop ending stocks declined by 23 million bushels to 1.922 billion bushels.

In export sales for the week ending September 3, total sales reached 79,788 metric tons for the 2025/26 season, which surpassed expectations that anticipated net cancellations. New crop sales for the same week were recorded at 1.929 million metric tons.
