**Sugar Market Update: Price Drop and Delivery Surge Amid Demand Concerns**
On October 12, 2023, sugar prices faced a significant decline, with October NY world sugar #11 (SBV26) closing down 3.06% at -0.55, and December London ICE white sugar #5 (SWZ26) falling 2.94% to -15.40, reaching three-week lows. Critically, 499,350 metric tons (MT) of sugar were delivered against the October London sugar contract, marking a 91% year-over-year increase and one of the largest deliveries on record for that month, indicating weak physical demand.
Industry forecasts suggest a troubling outlook for global sugar production. The International Sugar Organization (ISO) has projected a global sugar deficit of 200,000 MT for the 2026/27 season, contrasting with a surplus of 1.1 million MT for 2025/26. In Brazil, June sugar production plummeted by 26.3% year-over-year, while Thai production is expected to drop by 17% to 10 MT. India, the world’s second-largest sugar producer, faces challenges as the monsoon rainfall remains 15% below normal. The USDA also predicts a 6.5% decline in global sugar production for 2026/27, exacerbating the situation.
