Microsoft’s Revenue from OpenAI Revealed
Microsoft reported $24.1 billion in revenue from its commercial arrangements with OpenAI for fiscal 2026, accounting for approximately 7% of its total revenue of $331.8 billion. The fiscal year ended on June 30, 2026, and OpenAI owed Microsoft $6 billion as of that date.
In addition, Microsoft’s commercial backlog reached $678 billion, an 84% increase year over year, though only 25% of this growth came from sources excluding OpenAI. OpenAI’s projected spending indicates it may burn through $3.7 billion in the first quarter of 2026, reflecting ongoing financial pressures on the company.
This dependence on OpenAI is significant, with the AI firm committing to purchase an additional $250 billion of Azure services as part of its corporate restructuring. The potential risk to Microsoft’s revenue stream lies in OpenAI’s cash burn rate, which could influence Azure’s growth and ongoing contract obligations.
