The freight coalition ZET SCALE has selected Tesla to lead a significant order for 2,500 electric Class 8 trucks, aiming to approximately double the current number of battery-electric heavy trucks in the U.S. This order will be delivered over several years across 10 regional hubs, including major cities like Los Angeles, Houston, Chicago, Atlanta, and New York-Newark.
Deliveries from Tesla’s new Semi factory in Nevada, which officially opens today, are expected to help meet these orders. This factory has a production capacity of up to 50,000 trucks annually. However, Tesla will share this contract with PACCAR‘s Kenworth, RIDE, and Volvo Group, indicating that Tesla’s share may set a record while not constituting the entire fleet.
As of now, Tesla’s stock (TSLA) has dropped 15% year-to-date, and the company faces challenges including production risks, a shrinking automotive gross margin of 16.3%, and downward revisions of earnings estimates.
