Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL), the world’s most valuable company, has been reigning supreme in the global market. However, the mighty tech giant currently stands at a crossroads, faced with significant potential risks, raising concerns about its ability to reclaim its innovative edge and overcome these looming obstacles.
Overview of Apple Inc.
AAPL is renowned for its top-of-the-line hardware and software, offering a range of products including smartphones, computers, laptops, tablets, wearable devices, and accessories. Its flagship product, the iPhone, has been the primary revenue driver, constituting over half of its fiscal 2023 earnings.
The company has also cultivated a robust services business, encompassing its App Store marketplace, cloud storage services, payment services, and advertising, contributing around 22% to its FY23 revenue.
The Unfolding Opportunities and Risks
Apple’s revenue growth has been bolstered by its services sector, with Services revenue reaching $85.2 billion in fiscal year 2023, marking a 9% surge. However, the company is now grappling with a contentious battle over its App Store, a critical component of its Services revenue, as an increasing number of developers express discontent with Apple’s commission fees, portending potential legal woes for the technology giant.
Given its modest growth and the risks it faces, I’d value the company between 13-16x FY26 EBITDA. That would be a range between $115-$145.
The Verdict
While Apple’s stock has experienced substantial growth over the past decade and the last five years, its appeal during the post-pandemic era has predominantly stemmed from multiple expansion. This unique situation has elevated the stock’s valuation, particularly in 2023, despite its revenue and net income downturn. Consequently, Apple now faces genuine threats to its high-margin revenue streams. As such, I have taken the decision to rate AAPL as a “Sell,” with a target price of $145. I anticipate reassessing this position once the company’s ongoing legal battles are resolved.
