Amid escalating tensions in the Red Sea, U.S. and U.K. military forces, bolstered by support from Australia, Bahrain, Canada, and the Netherlands, carried out a fresh round of strikes on Monday. The target: eight Houthi sites in Yemen, a direct response to the militant group’s recent aggressive actions against ships traversing the vital waterway.
The precise targets of the strikes included a Houthi underground storage site and strategic locations linked to the group’s missile and air surveillance infrastructure. According to a joint statement, the strikes were executed with the unified goal of safeguarding the stability and security of the Red Sea region and international trade routes.
“We stand ready to take further actions to neutralize threats or respond to attacks, ensuring the stability and security of the Red Sea region and international trade routes,” a senior defense official declared to reporters as a pledge of unwavering commitment.
The Houthis, in response to Israel’s ongoing conflict in Gaza, have conducted over 30 assaults on ships since the middle of November, claiming the vessels have ties to Israel. The latest offensive represents the eighth such sequence of strikes by the U.S. on Houthi targets since January 12, yet the rebel group reportedly remains resolute and undeterred.
According to Vice Adm. Brad Cooper, head of the Navy’s 5th Fleet, there is unequivocal evidence of Iran’s direct involvement in the Houthis’ attacks. “Iran is very directly involved,” Vice Adm. Cooper emphasized in an interview with the Associated Press, adding, “Iran is clearly funding, resourcing, supplying, and providing training for these hostilities.”
