Industry Applauds Peruvian Government’s Bold Move
The Peruvian government has made a groundbreaking move to simplify procedures in the mining sector. Miners have enthusiastically welcomed this initiative, emphasizing the crucial need for enhanced coordination among regulatory bodies such as the National Water Authority (ANA) and the National Environmental Certification Service for Sustainable Investments (SENACE).
The aim of the initiative is to streamline investors’ work in the responsible development of mining activities, improve efficiency, and cut bureaucratic red tape to prevent repetitive administrative procedures.
Record-breaking Copper Production in 2023
Peru’s copper production in 2023 reached an unprecedented high, with over 2.75 million fine metric tonnes of the red metal being extracted. This marks a significant 12.7% surge from the previous year’s production. The US Geological Survey’s 2024 Mineral Commodity Summaries reaffirm Peru’s position as the world’s second-largest copper producer.
Noteworthy Metal Production Stats
In addition to the impressive copper figures, the Ministry of Energy and Mines (Minem) disclosed other notable production statistics. Gold production surged by 2.8% in 2023, equating to 99 million fine grams. Likewise, zinc production witnessed a notable 7.2% increase, exceeding 1.4 million fine metric tons. Furthermore, iron ore production experienced an 8.8% upturn, surpassing 14 million fine metric tons.
