GlobalFoundries (NASDAQ:GFS) is set to receive a significant boost with a $1.5 billion grant from the U.S. government aimed at bolstering domestic semiconductor manufacturing, as part of the U.S. CHIPS and Science Act.

With this funding, GlobalFoundries will enhance its existing fab in Malta, New York by incorporating technologies already in production in the company’s Singapore and Germany facilities, tailored to support the U.S. auto industry.

The company will also embark on the construction of a cutting-edge fab on the Malta campus, in anticipation of rising demand for U.S.-made chips intended for diverse applications such as automotive, aerospace, defense, and AI.

Moreover, GlobalFoundries will initiate modernization efforts at its facility in Essex Junction, Vermont.

Looking ahead, the company plans to invest over $12 billion over the next decade across its two U.S. sites, leveraging public-private partnerships and government funding, contingent on demand.

As part of the initiatives in Malta, New York, Governor Hochul has announced $575 million in planned direct funding for New York State Green CHIPS, along with a $15 million allocation for NYS Workforce Development activities for GlobalFoundries. Additionally, the New York Power Authority will provide $30 million for NYS Infrastructure upgrades and Energy incentives.

The company has projected that these investments will lead to the creation of over 1,500 manufacturing jobs and approximately 9,000 construction positions throughout the project’s duration.

“This will triple production capacity of GlobalFoundries’ already massive campus in Saratoga County, spur billions in public-private investment, and help bring thousands of new good-paying manufacturing and union construction jobs to the Capital Region,” remarked Senator Chuck Schumer, underlining the far-reaching impact of this development.

In a separate development, recent reports suggested that Intel (INTC) is in talks with the Biden administration to secure over $10 billion in subsidies for semiconductor manufacturing, further underscoring the heightened commitment to advancing the industry.
