Alphabet’s (NASDAQ:GOOGL, NASDAQ:GOOG) Google Incognito lawsuit is progressing with the tech giant committing to eradicating data as part of a resolution.
This agreement mandates Google to eliminate billions of records amassed from Incognito mode users through the years. The crux of the matter lies in Google’s continued tracking of users despite employing the private browsing feature.
Additionally, changes to Incognito mode are on the horizon. This includes clearer language from the company regarding the information it gathers. Users will have the ability to restrict certain cookies for a duration of five years.
Commenting on the settlement of the Incognito lawsuit, Google spokesperson José Castañeda stated to CNN.
“[Google is] pleased to settle this lawsuit, which we always believed was meritless. We never associate data with users when they use Incognito mode. We are happy to delete old technical data that was never associated with an individual and was never used for any form of personalization.”
The Future of Google Incognito Lawsuit
According to the settlement terms, Google will not be compensating users for damages. This is a departure from the initial demands by plaintiffs for $5 billion in damages. Nevertheless, individual users retain the right to litigate against the company for damages. Consequently, Google might confront further lawsuits related to data collection in Incognito mode.
Both GOOGL and GOOG shares have dipped more than 1% as of Tuesday morning.
