Tesla and Amazon Compete in Robotaxi Expansion
Amazon’s Zoox plans to test its new purpose-built robotaxis in Austin and Miami, marking a significant coast-to-coast expansion as part of its growth strategy in 2024. The CEO, Aicha Evans, cited insights from early deployments driving this expansion. Meanwhile, Tesla has delayed its predictions for its robotaxi program, now aiming to cover one-quarter to half of the U.S. population by the end of the year, pending regulatory approval.
As of early 2023, Tesla’s robotaxi program, which only launched in Austin in June 2023, reported a crash rate significantly higher than Alphabet’s Waymo. A Bank of America analysis noted that Tesla’s robotaxi efforts account for 52% of its overall valuation, highlighting the pressure on the company to accelerate its development in a race where Amazon is taking the lead.
