Amazon’s Significant Capital Expenditure Increase
Amazon (NASDAQ: AMZN) announced it will increase its capital expenditures to $220 billion by 2026, a $20 billion rise from previous estimates, largely due to rising memory costs. This update came during its latest earnings report, where the company reported a 20% year-over-year revenue growth in Q2, driven primarily by Amazon Web Services (AWS), which achieved its highest growth rate in over four years.
AWS generated an operating income of $16.6 billion, up from $10.2 billion in the same quarter last year, contributing to a total company operating income of $27.5 billion—a 43.2% increase year-over-year. With AWS commanding over 60% of the cloud market alongside Microsoft and Alphabet, Amazon’s extensive capital expenditures are expected to solidify its competitive advantage in the sector.
