Amazon’s Growing AI and Chip Business
Amazon (NASDAQ: AMZN) reported significant growth in its latest financial year, with sales reaching $716 billion and net income at $77 billion. The company is capitalizing on the increasing demand for artificial intelligence (AI) within its e-commerce and cloud computing divisions, particularly through Amazon Web Services (AWS), the world’s largest cloud service provider. Amazon’s AI chip products, like the Trainium series, have garnered high demand, with Trainium3 nearly fully subscribed and early reservations for Trainium4 already made.
Amazon’s in-house designed chips have achieved an annual revenue run rate of $20 billion within AWS, with potential to reach $50 billion if sold externally. By shifting reliance from external chip providers like Intel to its own technology, Amazon anticipates saving “tens of billions” in capital expenditures annually. Chief Andy Jassy indicated that this positions Amazon to develop a significant new revenue stream, reinforcing the company’s promising future in the chip business.
